HOTEL HOPEFUL // STEPHAN WEITZEL (*1970)
www.stephanweitzel.com
His aim is to develop a new portfolio of drawings and screenprints, HOTEL
HOPEFUL. Looking at the uncertain future of M10, Weitzel imagines the life of a
hotel to come, projecting, both in writing and visual language, a plot of
possible stories and histories to be acted and experienced there. HOTEL HOPEFUL,
in this respect, functions as an anticipated re-enactment. Reception, breakfast
room, employees’
restroom, laundry, guest rooms... all spaces will be invested and investigated.
The hotel as a semi-private/semi-public space where intimacy meets street life.
The hotel as the exiled home, as a temporary continuity.
The hotel as the crossing-point of traces, as the fulminent culmination of
escape, hope, desire and rest.
Alongside this major project, Stephan Weitzel will produce an edition of 1000
postcards to be distributed in Weimar, a viral infection of the cosy Weimar
tourist views. He draws upon his own large-scale gouache WEIMAR?! NIEMANDSLAND,
elaborated in 2003, when he was a resident at the ACC Gallery. This work, among
others were exhibited there in the group show "herkunft?! niemandsland", in
2004. The drawing figures conflictual façades of 2Oth century Weimar, thus
mimicking yet challenging the postcard and poster views of the Classical city.
Presentation of his drawings and
work-in-progress-prints (HOTEL HOPEFUL) as part of the Monday Night pleasures,
on May 25th 2009.
WORKSHOP / One-To-One CRITs
Instead of a group workshop, Stephan Weitzel, resident and Monday Lecturer at
M10, proposes during the last two weeks in May individual sessions with students
of all disciplines and years.
Having someone from “out there“ consider our own work, getting in some fresh air,
can often help to clarify and strengthen our stance and practice.
These are some of the many possible points to be looked at, it’s up to you!
Displaying some of your work in your studio/work space; talking about your own
work; bearing someone else looking at your work without saying a word; analysing
one’s own work; being silent/being outspoken; seeing its strengths;
acknowledging what needs to be developed; looking at others’ works; how not to
get distracted; where to get input from; practical skills to experiment;
presenting a visual and written documentation of your own work; installing an
exhibition; international networking; working with a gallery; how to make one of
art and life and stay sane... etc. etc.
If you are interested in meeting the artist for a constructive, critical and
friendly exchange, please send your date priorities via email to:
